The business of Sutton Bowling Club Limited is managed by the
Directors who are all members of the Company and shall be seven in
number, or such greater or lesser number (but not less than four) as
the members shall decide in General Meeting. The composition of the
Board shall be such that at least half of the Directors are members
of both the Indoor and Outdoor Clubs. Directors are appointed to
serve for a three-year period at the Annual General Meeting, usually
held in August. This year's AGM will be held at 7.30pm on Monday 18
August 2008. At every AGM, one third of the Directors or, if
their number is not a multiple of three, the number nearest to
one-third, shall retire from office. Directors retiring by rotation
shall be those who have been longest in office, but they shall be
eligible for re-election at the AGM. Neil Asten and Roy Jones are
the Directors retiring by rotation but have indicated that they will
re-stand for election at the AGM on the 18 August. As at the 25
July it appears that there will be two vacancies on the Board as
Brian Clark resigned as a Director in June 2008 and Anne Singleton
has decided to stand down as a Director at the
AGM.
The current Board
comprises:
Neil Asten - Chairman
Neil has extensive business experience, having run his
own public relations, advertising and publishing companies for some
40 years. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1991 and sits
as a magistrate on the Sutton Bench. Recently retired, he was
appointed a Director in September 2006. In addition to being
Chairman of the Board he works in conjunction with Pat Wills, the
Company Secretary, to oversee office administration. A member of the
Indoor and Outdoor Sections, Neil was Indoor Club Captain in
2001/02. He has acted as a Club Delegate on the Surrey County Indoor
Bowling Association.
John Hannon -
Maintenance Director John began his career in the
clothing trade. He became Warehouse Manager dealing with most
aspects of running the business. Following a career change, he
worked for many years with one of the major insurers. At the age of
50 he was made redundant, but continued in their employ as a
consultant. He still works part-time for a local firm of insurance
brokers.
Roy Jones – Finance
Director Roy trained as an engineer and had many years
experience in top management. Prior to retirement eight years ago,
he was Managing Director and Chief Executive of a substantial
business within a large multi-national company, was a member of the
National Executive, and Pension Director of a Top 50 Pension Fund.
He has been a member of the British Institute of Management, Past
Chairman of the Association of Medical Imaging and a member of the
British Institute of Radiology.
Miss Anne
Singleton - Membership Director Anne is currently
responsible for all aspects of membership. She is keen to promote
our ‘Youth’ section and, through our qualified coaches, to ensure
that non-bowlers of whatever age are attracted to the Club for
tuition. Anne is a ‘winter only’ bowler at Sutton. In the summer,
she bowls outdoors at Rosehill, where she is the Ladies’ Secretary.
Anne is a much retired Head Teacher. Her career was spent in some of
London’s most deprived Primary schools. Since retirement, playing
bowls and working for her two bowls clubs, have certainly filled the
gap. She says that, after a working lifetime with little children,
it is a pleasure to relax in adult company.
Pat
Wills – Director and Company Secretary Pat spent over 30
years in government service, taking the opportunity to be part of a
management buy out team that successfully bid to acquire a
Government Agency in 1995. She served as a Company Director of the
privatised agency for three years before retiring in 1999. On
retirement she joined a voluntary organisation and, for the last
nine years, has been helping children at a local primary school with
their reading. She served for five years on the Ladies’ Outdoor
Committee before being appointed Company Secretary in October 2006
and a Director in August 2007. Pat has been a keen competitive
bowler, both indoors and outdoors for 27 years, and is a founder
member of the Indoor Club. She has played at county level indoors
and outdoors in the inter-County John’s and Atherley Trophy teams on
a number of occasions and in the inter-County outdoor Double Rinks -
Walker Cup - in 2006 and 2007. In addition to her success in County
and National competitions, including reaching the National Finals
several times, Pat has played in all the major club representative
games for many years.
Tony Wills - Bar and
Popinjay Restaurant Director Tony spent 28 years in
public service, starting as a telecommunications cable
fault-locating engineer and working his way through the ranks to
junior management. During that period he spent eight years as
Secretary at a local Conservative Club and, alongside the general
duties of a Club Secretary, he gained an immense amount of
experience in the bar and catering side of club life. He has
organised outings for members to France, Spain (World Cup), Malta
and various other places abroad and in the UK. Tony joined Sutton
Bowling Club in 1982 at the Ventnor Road site and was a founder
member of the Indoor Club. He has served on all committees from time
to time. He is in his second consecutive year as Captain of the
Indoor Club, a position he has held on previous occasions - as he
has for the Outdoor Club. He was the originator of the Easter Open
Indoor Tournament that he still runs today, ably assisted by Maureen
and Bill Stone. Tony, who joined the Board in 2006, finds time to
pursue his part time job (or hobby) working on racetracks as a
starter’s signaller. |
