AMY-ROSE BOWL 31s & UNDER INTER
COUNTY DOUBLE RINK
Chantelle Bedward has been
selected as travelling reserve for the above Competition to be
played at Leamington Spa on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd August. In the
first round Surrey will play Middlesex.
Chantelle will also be playing at Leamington in the National
Finals of the Under 25s Pairs. With her partner, England Junior
International Debbie Sarratt who plays at Old Coulsdon outdoors and
Sutton indoors, they beat a pair from Buckinghamshire to reach the
last 16 in the Competition. LADIES'
SURREY COUNTY COMPETITIONS
Sutton ladies have had a
good run in this season's Competitions with Margaret Swan qualifying
for her County Badge. Singles
Margaret
Smith lost to English International Doreen Hankin in the semi
finals of the Two Wood Singles played at Sutton on Wednesday 16
July. Enid Bakewell lost in the quarter finals played at
Shirley Park on Friday 4 July. Sharmista Patel
and Virginia Smith reached the quarer finals of the Four
Wood Singles played at Southey on Monday 24
June. Pairs Virginia and Pearl
Macdonald lost to Purley Bury in the last 16 in the Pairs
played at Bletchingley on Wednesday 9
July. Triples Virginia, Pearl and Janet Jones
lost to Croydon in the quarter finals of the Triples played at Cheam
Fields on Friday 27 June.
Fours
Janet
Jones, Margaret Swan, Val Dowell and Marie Buckland lost in the
quarter finals at Purley on Monday 7 July. The two points Margaret
gained on the day ensured that she qualified for her County Badge.
Another four, Majorie Caldwell, Enid Bakewell, Virginia Smith and
Pearl Macdonald lost in the last 16 plaed at Ember on 7
July.
MEN'S SURREY COUNTY
COMPETITIONS Several Sutton players have done
exceedingly well to reach the Area Three Quarter Finals (round
5) which are being played week commencing Monday 16
June.
Singles Keith Adams, our only
player still left in the Singles, is playing away on Friday 20 June
at Epsom Park against Geoff O'Leary.
Unbadged
Singles Terry Buckland won his fourth round match away
at Wallington against Sutton Indoor player Harry Botfield on
Wednesday 11 June, and he returns to the same green on Wednesday 18
to play another Sutton Indoor player, Martin
Peolosi. Pairs Thursday 19 June wil be a big
day for our three pairs still left in the Competition. Terry
Buckland & Roger Graves play Terry Dobbs & Derek
Godbold which means that we will defintely have one pair through to
the last 16 of the Competition. One more win and we could have two
more Sutton players qualifying for their County Badge. Keith Adams
& Steve Shanley, two long-standing badged players, are away
at Chipstead.
Fours Three Sutton
rinks are through to round 5. This is a particularly good
achievement as three of the six Sutton teams entered in the
Competition were knocked out by our own teams. The rink skipped by
Roger Graves beat Dave Walters's rink in the first round
way back on the 12 May only to lose by one shot to Iain Reid's team
in the fourth round on Monday 9 June. Iain's team will now play
Geoff Taylor's rink on Monday 16 June. Also through to
round five is Ray Hall's team that beat Steve Shanley's
team in round four.
Secretaries Alan
Butler had good wins against opponents from Epsom Court and
Banstead Neville in the Secretary's Competition but lost his third
game to David King from
Felbridge.
MENS' OVER
55s NATIONAL COMPETITIONS
Sutton
bowlers playing in the above Pairs Competition have not
been as successful this season as they have been in previous
seasons. Seven pairs entered the Competition. Two pairs, Neil
Asten & Mike Doherty and Ray Hall & Keith Harold got through
to round two only to be knocked out by teams
from Chipstead and Wallington respectively. John Roll
& Kevin Donovan won their preliminary round match
away at Dorking only to lose in the next round to a
Croydon pair skipped by John Gale. The other four pairs - Terry
Buckland & Charlie Radley, Iain Reid & Roger Limpenny,
Keith Adams & Steve Shanley and Alan Bateman & Laurie
Rumsey - all went out in preliminary round matches.
National Singles Better news in the Over
55s Singles Competition as four out of seven
members playing in the preliminary round won their
matches, and Neil Asten and Ray Hall have
progressed through to the third round. Neil and Ray
now play each other at 6pm on Thursday 19 June for a place in the
Zone Final against either Paul Nolan from Mitcham or Jim Lant from
Putney Town. Gordan Adams, Lawrie Rumsey and
Keith Adams lost to opponents from Wallington, Epsom Park
and Dorking respectively. Iain Reid beat an opponent
from Shirley Park but lost in round one to John Exton from
Ashtead. Steve Shanley also beat a player from Shirley Park but lost
to Neil in round one. Neil's other two wins were against
opponents from Rose Hill and Wallington. Ray has beaten
two players from Croydon and one from
Horley.
TOP HONOURS FOR SUTTON
BOWLERS Two Club members were honoured at the
Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association's AGM held on the 16
April. Alf Medlin and David Miller were awarded Life Membership of
the Association for their years of dedicated service to indoor
bowling in the County. Alf has served on various County Committees
over some 20 years and was elected an Honorary Vice President
in 2001. David is a former County President who promoted various
changes to County administration during his year of office,
including significant restructuring of policy and approach to County
representative match selections, the introduction of a Forward
Planning Committee and an innovative coaching scheme to develop
front end bowlers. Both have worked hard additionally to promote
Sutton Indoor Bowling Club and have contributed to raising the
Club's profile at County level and beyond. The award of Life
Membership is a rare event and given only for exceptional service to
the County, and bowls in general. There are, currently, only five
Life Members of
SCIBA.
